Producer

The producer is the big boss. In HS, this person may be the head of the drama/theater dept. But, it's most likely to be the Principal. The person who has the last say. In the outside would, the big wig producer is the one who has the most money. Yup, money talks.

When you look at a program, you'll notice several titles including the work producer. You'll have executive producers, producers, assistant producers, co-producers of all sorts.

A good producer will often stay out of the way of those who are creating the show. That is the director and the designers. The producer hires all of these people and then lets them do their jobs. I've worked on shows where the director has gotten replaced by the producer. Ah, the director is not the last word after all. Hmm. What does that say? The producer may just have a vision about the show after all.

Here are several scenarios.

bulletA person reads a book and loves it. They are in the position of "producing" the book into a play. They purchase the rights to the book. They hire someone to turn the book into a script. This person may be the author of the book, or a scriptwriter.
The producer then finds a Director who shares the same vision towards the finished show. The director may request a certain Designer Team and/or other staff. The producer then hires them. The team is created and the work starts.
bulletA person reads a book and loves it. They wish to direct the play. But, they can't afford to pay anyone to help. This director finds a person with money who believes in him/her. This producer is producing this director's play.
bulletAn author writes a play, sends it off to a big theater company. The person who reads the play thinks it could work. That "reader" recommends the play to the companies decision makers. They say OK. Thay assign a producer. That person calls the director whom they think will do the best job. Most likely a person who has worked for them before.
    And the cycle starts...
bulletMel Brooks writes a movie. Wants to turn it into a Broadway Musical. Everybody jumps!
